Mark moved to the Mornington Peninsula as a young child and Natalie when she started work. Together they have travelled extensively however have come to the realisation that their favourite place is “their own backyard’ – the Mornington Peninsula. With its array of beaches (from child friendly through to ocean surf beaches) it’s hinterland with winding country roads, through to its magnificent views from locations such as Arthurs Seat. Add to this one of Australia’s finest foods and wine regions and you have the ideal location. It is not surprising that Mark and Natalie have made this region their home.
Their love of wine took a new direction when in 2004 they came across a wine making course in Red Hill. Run by Peter Mitchell, the “Heartbreak Grape” course specialises in the most challenging grape variety, Pinot Noir. When made well, this grape variety can achieve amazing results. This grape variety demonstrates the characteristics of the year’s vintage and the “terroir” in which the grapes were grown. Mark and Natalie have now been making Pinot Noir for the past decade. This experience has greatly enhanced their knowledge and appreciation of good winemaking.
As you drive into this winery you maybe awe struck by the gardens leading up to the impressive building of the winery itself. This attention to detail is reflected in their wines with their philosophy of producing wines of high quality. Visiting and tasting in the ‘barrel room’ is a unique experience to be enjoyed.
This is a working vineyard where your wine tasting is likely to take place in their barrel room. Consequently your host at cellar door will probably be one of the wine making staff who will give you insight into their wine making objectives. Feel free to roam through the winery but beware of the ‘Ginger Ninja.’
Originally an apple orchard, the past 30 years has seen this site transformed into an award winning vineyard with a reputation for quality Pinot Noir and Shiraz. The awards have continued with its restaurant receiving a coveted chef’s hat for the past 3 years.
